Looking for fun ways to get children interested in food this festive season? We’ve got some great ideas from There are lots of great ways to involve all the family in cooking up treats in the run-up to Christmas. From food gift ideas to Yuletide snacks, Jane has created activities to help children understand where their food comes from and what makes a nutritious meal so that they can make healthier choices.
Jane says: “In our current cooking sessions with children at Tesco Rotherham’s new Eat Happy kitchen, we’re having fun cooking the gingerbread shapes and decorating them with healthy toppings such as dried cranberries and mixed peel and fruits. They make lovely presents, great decorations for the tree – and they’re yummy just to eat!
“Another great idea is to get children to create small individual Christmas fruit cakes, homemade pots of sweet mincemeat or even some spiced Christmas muffins – delicious!”
Fancy a healthy alternative? Jane says: “You could also make a healthy fresh fruit cake made from melon, strawberries, cherries, oranges etc, all cut and shaped to look like a beautiful cake. This is a great idea to encourage children to try more fruit, especially when they have created it. You can even cut the letters for ‘happy Christmas’ out from pineapple or melon slices – but children may need some adult help.”
These culinary delights are all great ways to involve children in the cooking process and being creative. But don’t forget, if they don’t want to do anything too fancy, children may just be happy to help peel a few carrots and chop some vegetables – so happy cooking!
