The magic of Online Field Trips

Thankyou

Our Magnificent Milk and Excellent Eggs Online Field Trips have proven big hits in the classroom! We’ve had some lovely responses from the teachers and pupils who took part.

In late January we pulled on our wellies and headed to the farm to learn about Magnificent Milk.

There, we found out that – incredibly! – the cows milk themselves. And if that wasn’t enough, we arrived just in time to witness Mary the cow giving birth to a calf.

For the first time we had students from all over Europe join us for the lesson. Mrs Goodman, from Moorside Primary School, had exchange students from Greece, Poland and Spain visiting their school, and we were very pleased to welcome them to our live event. Mrs Goodman thinks the visiting students were very brave to contribute in a language they are still learning, and we agree!

Ms Goodison and her class from Greswell Primary School also had a great time. Ms Goodison told us afterwards: "The children loved today. They also enjoyed the tasting session after! I had one child, who is milk intolerant, find out they like soya milk and one child tasted yoghurt for the first time and loved it!” We’re really pleased the children enjoyed tasting different milk products. And we love yoghurt too!

Next up this term was Excellent Eggs, so we hit the road again to find out about eggs and the chickens that lay them. We learned loads, including the fact that white chickens lay white eggs while brown chickens lay brown eggs. Remarkable! We have tons of resources that you can use to help your class explore all things egg, from recipes to quizzes.

Mrs Sharp, from Downsbrook Middle School, tweeted us a picture of some eggshell art that her class made after taking part in the Online Field Trip (we think it’s egg-cellent, so we’ve shared a picture of it above). She told us: “What a fantastic day I have had watching the children learn by talking to people in industry and listening to other children from different schools. It was a pleasure to see them learning in such a different climate.”

We’d really like to thank all the teachers for sharing their stories with us – it’s great to hear what the pupils thought in the classroom.

Our next Online Field Trip is on 26 February, when we’ll be finding out how breakfast cereal gets from farm to bowl. Join us then!
