Crunchy coleslaw salad

This tasty salad is perfect for 8-9-year-olds and a great way to get them involved in preparing food for social occasions, such as barbecues in the summer. With this recipe, they will really hone their cutting and grating skills. Now all we need is some sun!

Equipment

  • Kitchen scissors

  • Chopping board

  • Peeler

  • Grater

  • Knife

  • Mixing bowl

  • Measuring spoons

Steps

  • Step 1

    Step 1

    Separate the cabbage leaves and cut them into strips with the scissors. ADULT SUPPORT.

  • Step 2

    Step 2

    Peel and grate the carrot. ADULT SUPPORT.

  • Step 3

    Cut the celery lengthways with a vegetable knife. ADULT SUPPORT.

  • Step 4

    Step 4

    Snip the celery into small pieces (over the mixing bowl). ADULT SUPPORT.

  • Step 5

    Step 5

    Place the cabbage and carrot into the mixing bowl.

  • Step 6

    Step 6

    Add the mayonnaise and yoghurt to the other ingredients, and mix together.

Makes:

1/4
white cabbage
1
carrot, topped and tailed
2 sticks
celery
1 x 15ml spoon
low-fat mayonnaise
1 x 15ml spoon
natural yoghurt

Handy Hint(s)

Add other vegetables, such as sweetcorn or spring onions.

Add herbs such as chives or parsley.

Serve with a jacket potato for a tasty lunch.
