A frittata is cooked using an egg base similar to that of an omelette or quiche. Ingredients vary, but often feature meats, cheeses and vegetables. The frittata is an Italian dish. Its name comes from the word fritta, which means to fry.

This recipe is a tasty alternative to an omelette and is great for 9-10 year olds. They will develop cutting techniques, practise cracking eggs and then whisking them, learn to accurately pour liquid and grate. An adult will need to put the frittata in the oven, but the children will observe how this is done safely, with oven gloves.

Oven baked frittatas

Equipment

  • Oven dish

  • Paper towel

  • Chopping board

  • Knife

  • Kitchen scissors

  • Mixing bowl

  • Whisk

  • Grater

  • Oven gloves

Method

  • Step 1

    Preheat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas mark 6. ADULT ONLY. 

  • Step 2

    Grease the oven dish.

  • Step 3

    Wipe the mushrooms with a damp paper towel to remove any soil.

  • Step 4

    Thinly slice the mushrooms. ADULT SUPERVISION.

  • Step 5

    Snip the pepper into strips and then snip the strips into small pieces. ADULT SUPERVISION.

  • Step 6

    Chop the new potatoes into quarters. ADULT SUPERVISION.

  • Step 7

    Snip the spring onions into small pieces. ADULT SUPERVISION.

  • Step 8

    Place the mushrooms, pepper, potatoes and spring onions into the oven dish.

  • Step 9

    Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk. ADULT SUPERVISION.

  • Step 10

    Whisk the crème fraiche into the eggs.

  • Step 11

    Grate the cheese and sprinkle over the other ingredients. ADULT SUPERVISION.

  • Step 12

    Wearing the oven gloves, place the frittata in the oven. ADULT ONLY.

  • Step 13

    Bake for 30-35 minutes.

  • Step 14

    Wearing the oven gloves, remove the frittata from the oven. ADULT ONLY.

reduced-fat crème fraiche
1 small handful
fresh parsley leaves

light cheddar cheese

Top tip(s)

Add a handful of peas or sweetcorn to the mixture of vegetables.
