Smoothies are a great and refreshing drink option for children. With so many varieties of fruit, there’s a flavour for every palette. This yummy recipe is a great way to teach 5-6-year-olds how to pour from a measuring jug and break up fruit into small pieces so it can be blended down into a nutritious smoothie.

This toolkit contains a recipe, along with ideas about how you could include it in your lesson. Take a look at the recipe below and refer to it alongside the teaching resources.

Super smoothie

Equipment

  • Measuring jug

  • Blender

  • Glass tumblers

Method

  • Step 1

    Measure the milk and pour it into the blender. ADULT SUPPORT.

  • Step 2

    Pour in the yoghurts.

  • Step 3

    Peel the bananas, break each one into two or three pieces, and add to the blender.

  • Step 4

    Pull the green stalks off the strawberries and drop the strawberries into the blender with the other ingredients.

  • Step 5

    ADULT ONLY. Put the lid on the blender, hold the lid with a clean dish cloth and switch on for 5- to 10-second pulses. Repeat this until the mixture is smooth. Unplug the blender.

  • Step 6

    Pour the smoothie into 4 plastic beakers or cups, and enjoy. ADULT SUPPORT.

500ml
cold semi-skimmed milk
2 x 125ml pots
fruit yoghurt
2
bananas
8 large
strawberries

Top tip(s)

You may wish to use fresh fruits that are in season, or add frozen or canned fruit.

Try experimenting with different flavours of yoghurt, such as banana and vanilla, or orange and mango.
